ABOUT US

The Department of Electronic and Physical Systems is part of a new field concerned with forming highly ordered building blocks by self-assembly or nanofabrication,
functionalizing these blocks from the viewpoints of electronics and photonics, and integrating these devices into systems.
Taking advantage of a body of knowledge established by our distinguished and experienced faculty,
we are striving to build up a system of science for the twenty-first century and to pass that system to our students.

Control electrons and light based on physics

The program is based on physics and, at the same time, on the science and technology of electrons and light. Students will master these in a specialized and systematic manner to cultivate an understanding of the fundamentals of this academic field and advanced applied skills.

Careful education in small groups

With 13 faculty members and about 80 students, the curriculum emphasizes the importance of basics. The percentage of students entering graduate school is high, and cutting-edge research is conducted in each laboratory.

Degree in either engineering or science

The program offers extensive and interdisciplinary research, and students can obtain either a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree, depending on the content of the research thesis submitted.

RESEARCH

Our course is based on electronics and physics, and covers condensed matter physics, electron-optic engineering, and system design.
As shown in the curriculum table, there are a variety of required and elective courses categorized into the subject groups of “Materials Science,” “Electronics,”“Photonics,”and“Information Systems.
In the first year, students take courses common to all schools of science and engineering to acquire a basic understanding of the humanities and social sciences, as well as the fundamental science and engineering.
In the second year, students take courses that form the basis for all courses offered by the Department of Electronic and Physical Systems.
The courses in the Department of Electronic and Physical Systems are arranged in such a way that students take required courses in basic studies in the lower grades
and progress to more specialized and advanced areas of study as they advance to the higher grades.

MESSAGEMessage to prospective students (entrance exam candidate)

While it is valuable to have an interest in currently trending fields, solving difficult social issues such as declining birth rates and environmental problems will require major innovations, potentially driven by technologies we have not yet discovered.

I encourage you to pursue both the practical applications needed right now and the foundational knowledge that will prepare you for future technologies. This department is ideal for those who want to study ICT, electronics, photonics, and materials engineering with a solid understanding of physics. Programming and mathematics are also essential tools, so we welcome students who excel in these areas.
